    CN reaches deal with Joliet-if EJ & E deal OKd

    Rail company will pay for various repairs in exchange for support

    As a new round of public meetings began Monday on the controversial acquisition of a suburban railroad, Canadian National Railway Co. reported an agreement with one of the towns facing a potentially sharp increase in freight traffic.

    CN has agreed to pay for track improvements and other updates along the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway through Joliet-a move intended to lessen the impact of additional freight trains at two busy rail crossings.

    Railroad rumble: Freight traffic would soar in some places and drop in others if Canadian National deal OKd

    The Canadian National Railway Co.’s plan to reroute freight train traffic through Chicago’s outlying suburbs has generated a locomotive-size controversy.

    Opponents say the plan raises concerns about safety, traffic and pollution, while CN and experts say diverting freight trains around Chicago’s congested rail corridor will benefit business and the economy.

    EJ&E sale finding support; critics unmoved

    The first formal support has come forth for Canadian National Railway’s plan to shift its freight traffic to the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern rail line. But Fox Valley critics remain unfazed.

    Leaders of several municipalities to the east, which are in line to see fewer trains if CN gets approval of the sale, have created their own coalition and are expected to receive the backing of U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski during an event this morning.

    CN picks up Lipinski’s support for EJ&E Railroad purchase

    Canadian National Railway’s attempt to buy the EJ&E Railroad is picking up supporters. U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-3rd), of Western Springs, will announce he is backing the controversial sale Thursday in North Riverside.
