    CN sues to get things moving on EJ&E purchase

    The Canadian National Railway is taking the fight over the EJ&E Railroad to court.

    The company filed a lawsuit in a U.S. appeals court Thursday to force federal regulators to speed up their review of CN’s plan to buy the EJ&E.

    Montreal-based CN wants the $300 million sale approved by the end of the year.

    But the Surface Transportation Board, the federal regulatory agency with final say on the transaction, has said a ruling could come as late as Jan. 31

    Congressman Dan Lipinski jumps aboard Canadian National deal

    Canadian National Railway’s bid to buy the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway gained momentum this week as a key congressman joined a coalition of suburban leaders throwing their support behind the controversial deal.

    U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) and the alliance of mayors and village presidents from Buffalo Grove, Crete, Des Plaines, North Riverside, Riverside and South Holland say the proposed purchase could reduce or eliminate CN train traffic in certain corridors, leading to fewer blocked crossings, idling trains and middle-of-the-night train whistles.

    EJ&E purchase is hot topic
