    Board: CN must wait to buy EJ&E

    Canadian National Railway cannot purchase the EJ&E Railway before a final study on the impact of the sale is released, the U.S. Surface Transportation Board said Monday.

    In a decision issued late Monday night, the federal board, which approves all railroad sales in the United States, denied CN’s request to take possession of the EJ&E early.

    Debate on CN/EJ&E deal coming to a close

    The Surface Transportation Board, a federal agency that oversees rail operations nationwide, will begin a new round of hearings Monday for people to comment on the Canadian National Railway’s attempt to buy the EJ&E Railroad.

    CN foes claim progress in fight against EJ&E buy

    CN trains rest in Bartlett, but noise riles residents

    No federal law against idling locomotives, agencies say

    On any given day, 1,200 freight, passenger and commuter trains travel through the thousands of miles of tracks in Chicago and suburbs, according to industry experts. Federal rules set strict limits on how many hours crews can work, but it can take days for a freight train to maneuver through Chicago’s jammed rail corridor. Therefore, trains often have to be stopped so crews can change, officials said. Unfortunately for resident’s of Chuck Rice’s Woodland Hills subdivision [in Bartlett], the tracks behind the homes have become a convenient location for CN to park its trains while changing crews.

    CN: Blame the government, not us

    TINLEY PARK — Canadian National Railway is getting a bum rap over its plan to acquire the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway, CN spokesmen said Monday. Opponents of the sale should look to government officials — not CN — to find blame, CN representatives said during a Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

    Suburban leaders rally against the CN-EJ&E buyout

    They’ve voiced their opposition to Canadian National’s proposed purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co., but Tuesday suburban leaders tried to take the message directly to shareholders.

    The leaders from Barrington Communities Against CN Rail Congestion and The Regional Answer to Canadian National, however, were escorted out of a Chicago hotel before they could get an audience at the CN shareholders meeting there Tuesday.

    Metra fretting over EJ&E rail sale

    It’s not a collision course yet, but Metra leaders are wary of the Canadian National Railway’s plans to purchase the EJ&E railroad.

    CN’s decision last fall to buy the line used for freight trains between Gary and Waukegan has drawn passionate opposition as well as support among politicians, the railroad industry and towns along the EJ&E.
