    CN reaches seventh Illinois voluntary mitigation agreement for EJ&E transaction

    CN (TSX: CNR: 0.0499, -0.0001, -0.2%)(NYSE: CNI: 34.44, -0.37, -1.06%) announced today a voluntary mitigation agreement with the Village of Mokena, Ill., located southwest of Chicago, that addresses the community’s concerns about CN’s proposed acquisition of the principal lines of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Company (EJ&E).  Under the agreement, CN would provide funding for quiet zones, noise mitigation, and emergency response personnel training and emergency communication capabilities.

    Hoffman Estates signs pact with railroad to mitigate train traffic

    Hoffman Estates joined the ranks of Chicago-area municipalities that approved an agreement with Canadian National Railway Company to soften the impact of new train routes.  CN has proposed a $300 million purchase of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern railroad tracks that arc around the city of Chicago.

    STAR Line supporters praise EJ&E decision delay

    The U.S. Surface Transportation Board denied Canadian National Railway’s attempt Monday (Sept. 8) to speed up the process to approve its purchase of the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railroad by Oct. 15.

    While the transportation board continues to study the environmental impact of the proposed deal, towns along the EJ&E are celebrating the latest decision. If the transaction goes through, freight traffic would be shifted off the CN line to the west through EJ&E municipalities.

    Rail ‘disruption’ upsets residents

    Local residents are looking for ways to stop the rumbling of more trains before they start.

    Hundreds of Hoffman Estates residents packed a village meeting Monday night to talk about potential problems of the sale of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad to Canadian National, with complaints ranging from noise to property values to homeland security. Freight traffic would decrease in Chicago with the transaction, but go up in villages such as Hoffman Estates and Barrington.
